General information: Chemical biology is a science that studies the biological effects of chemical substances and their internal mechanisms. It is a new frontier subject that deeply integrates chemistry, biology, medicine, and other disciplines at the molecular level. The central task of chemical biology is to make full use of Yunnan’s abundant biological resources and scientific means to clarify the law of interaction between natural products and living organisms. Chemical biology aims to cultivate inter-disciplinary talent with solid fundamental knowledge of chemistry and biology, proficient in chemical and biological experimental methods and skills, good humanistic quality, a strong sense of social responsibility and international vision, capable of engaging in the essential ability of scientific research in the interdisciplinary field of chemical biology, competent for teaching, scientific research, scientific and technological development and management in the field of chemical biology, innovative spirit and practical ability. The duration of study in chemical biology is 3-6 years, and a bachelor of science degree is awarded.

Main course: Chemical biology majors complete the study of public courses of quality education in Grade 1 and grade 2, including introductory classes of inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, general biology, etc. The third and fourth grades study chemical biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, cell biology, molecular pharmacology, structural biology, computational chemical biology, pharmaceutical design, and other professional courses, carry out professional practice and scientific research training, and complete the graduation thesis design.

Majors’ characteristics: The teaching process of chemical biology includes three steps: classroom teaching and practice, scientific research practice, and comprehensive quality training. Relying on scientific research platforms such as the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of education and the engineering research center of the department of education, it focuses on training and improving students’ learning ability, practical ability, creative thinking ability, and social adaptability.

Employment orientation: Graduates trained in chemical biology can engage in teaching, scientific research, analysis and testing, process supervision, technology development, and management in related fields such as chemistry, medicine and health, food, health and epidemic prevention, hydrology, customs, fine chemicals, environment, materials, life sciences, and health products. They can also continue to study master’s and doctoral degrees in chemistry, biology, and chemical biology in scientific research institutes and universities.
